Views Significance in Patent Drawings

Views Significance in Patent Drawings

We all know that patent drawings are an important part of a patent application. However, we don’t realise that different views of a patent drawing have different meanings and uses. It’s not mandatory to include a patent drawing in your patent application. However, you should include patent drawings as it helps examiners at the USPTO understand your invention. The USPTO has several guidelines related to patent drawings and views. In event of any confusion and incompliance, the USPTO doesn’t entertain your patent application. Therefore, you should follow the USPTO guidelines to avoid any unnecessary rejections. Moreover, we recommend you including as many patent drawings as you can in your patent application. In this blog post, we will go through those different views and their importance.

The Purpose of Views in Patent Drawings

The USPTO, governing body in the United States, says a patent drawing must contain as many views as necessary. You have to comply with the USPTO guidelines so as to get a patent. The USPTO prepares and amends the guidelines to make the patent process smooth and hassle-free.

The purpose of views in patent drawings is to make your invention easy to understand. A patent application has various sections like claims, specifications, description of your invention, and abstract. In many cases, these aforementioned sections aren’t enough to understand an invention properly. As a result, the presence of additional patent drawings and views is necessary in a patent application. Moreover, you can use different views to breakdown a large section of an invention into smaller sections. Consequently, it becomes easier to describe your invention.

You have to group all views of the drawing together and arrange them on sheets properly. The USPTO prefers to see views in an upright position. In addition, it wants every view to be separated from one another. Besides, you must not include views in the sheets that contain the specifications, claims, or abstract.

Types of Views in Patent Drawings

Now, we’ve understood the purpose of views in patent drawings. Let us look at different types of views in a patent application.

Exploded views

An exploded view of a patent drawing shows relationship of various parts. By looking at the exploded view, you can come to know assembly of various parts of the invention. You have to put exploded views with the separated parts inside a bracket. Here, in figure 1, you can see an example of an exploded view.

Partial Views

When your invention is a machine or device that can’t be shown completely in a single view, you may show partial views of it. You can breakdown the complete invention into partial views. Later, you can put those views on a single sheet.

However, you may extend partial views on several sheets if you can’t accommodate all partial views on a single sheet.

Sectional views

You may include sectional views in your patent application. In many cases, the interior of an invention is hard to understand without sectional views. Sectional views can be obtained by cutting your invention and showing the interior of the invention. You don’t have to literally cut the invention. You may do it with the help of patent drawing software.

Alternate Position and Modified Forms

Your invention may have multiple alternate positions. To show them, you have to include them in a specific way mentioned by the USPTO. You have to include several moved positions which you can show by broken lines. Moreover, you need to superimpose moved positions upon a suitable view. You have to do this without crowding the sheet. Otherwise, you must use a separate view for this purpose. You may show modified forms of construction in separate views.
